True North 2017

The last few weeks have seen my 3 years studying graphic design at York St John University come to an end. What better way to finish the course than exhibiting all of our hard work at our own design show: True North.

'True North is an exhibition celebrating the optimism, creativity and ambition of art and design students at York St John University.'

This would be my first ever experience of showcasing my work not only to industry partners but also the general public! The show lasted one night and 4 full days, the invitation only launch night was a fantastic experience with around 400 people attending! This included many of the tutor's contacts in industry as well as clients we had worked with this year on live projects.

The show comprised of work from: Graphic Design, Product Design, Interior Design, Fine Art, and stretched across the historic part of the YSJ campus including 3 'pods' as the centre piece in the idyllic quad.

I showcased my National Rail major project and my TEACH by transdev client project as well as my portfolio in general. I complemented this with a giveaway portfolio in newspaper format, I also (with a LOT of help from a friend!) created a small station diorama with a model locomotive in my National Rail livery!

I received some great comments on my work and I really enjoyed chatting to people about my projects and my processes. I was also lucky enough to be one of just three end of year award winners on my course! I won the "Best external client project" award which made a nice addition to my table!

Post launch night the show was a lot quieter over the next few days. Although still provided great networking opportunities as well as allowing me to show family around and speak to the general public, the National Rail project being particularly relevant with the soon to be decided general election.

I'll certainly miss my time at York St John, (excuse the classic uni cliche but...) 'its been the best 3 years of my life' We ended our time studying design in style with the show, and I think I speak for everyone in saying how good it turned out and how thoroughly enjoyable it was!

Cheers YSJ its been a blast!
